![]() H&R Block Tax Software 2016 Free Roth ConversionTo do this accurately with prior year software you need to know which yearly changes in the IRS tax values affect your particular return. The Roth Conversion must be made prior to January 1. Have you received a 1099 from H&R block for the refund bonus?I might consider it this year, since I've been using taxact and they have increased their prices substantially.Dual wrote:I am curious why just using last year's software is not good enough for planning? One example (there must be plenty of others), is trying to max out (to the dollar) a tax-free Roth Conversion to the top of the 50% bracket of the Saver's Credit. I would have to get a $5000 refund to break even for my other 1% ($29.95 + $20? state filing fee).Other gift cards than amazon are cheaper on the secondary market sites anyway. For those getting this deal though, have you been able to file an extension to round off your refund to whatever you want it to be ($9000?). Not bad, but not tax-free 10%.This is why I don't bother with it - the taxes which in my 40% marginal rate reduces 10% to 6%.Last year, chase freedom was giving 10% cash back or 10x UR points (worth much more than 10% towards travel if you have another card such as Sapphire reserve) on amazon up to $1500, and even 5% for another $1500.I have the amazon prime card which gives 5% anyway. So for me the savings is 5% vs 6% is not worth it. I think one has to pay taxes on the bonus by putting it down as "Other income" on Form 1040, Line 21, so it gets taxed. So it is more like getting 8% taxable interest on your refund. Microsoft word mac prompt for credentialsFortunately, there are ways to reduce AGI after January 1 to compensate, such as making an small additional TIRA contribution or recharacterizing part of a Roth contribution into a TIRA contribution. So using the correct years software makes the job a bit easier. In this example, missing by one dollar can reduce the tax credit by $1200 (credit drops from $2000 (50%) to $800 (20%)). However, the Saver's Credit bracket levels change from year to year and are coded into the software and cannot be overridden. I could better understand the impact of certain transactions and reporting. However, at the end of the day, I would have been fine with either product.Having used both and switched from TT to Block two years ago, I agree that there is not a big difference between the usability of the two products but the distinction you raise puzzles me because Block software also has a box (in the upper left corner) that constantly updates for any input or changes made.(My reasons for switching to Block and staying with it for three years: (1) TT was not letting me choose the education benefit that I knew was optimal, it kept insisting that another one was better and would not allow me to override their suboptimal choice and (2) Block was cheaper for the same functionality. After using both, I preferred Turbo Tax as I simply liked the small box in the upper right hand corner that constantly updated for any input or changes I made. I actually used H&R Block's program for many years before switching to Turbo Tax. I wish TaxSlayer Pro would be so easy.I agree. Not difficult to do direct form entry and bypass all the silly questions in the interview. Especially when Amazon deposits a refund bonus into my account each year sufficient to cover the cost of buying the software next year.Abuss368 wrote:I used H&R Bloack's Tax program for many years and thought it was always a good reliable program.I used it last year for the first time and will again this year.
